Its composition includes calcium, titanium, and silicon, and even small variations in these elements can affect crystal habit and color. Talc represents a very different end of the spectrum. As the softest mineral on the Mohs hardness scale, it is easily scratched by a fingernail and has a characteristic greasy feel. Talc forms through the alteration of magnesium-rich rocks, often in hydrothermal or metamorphic environments. Its softness and chemical stability make it important in industrial applications, but it is less commonly collected for crystal form.
The “T” section also includes oxide minerals such as tennantite and tetrahedrite, which are closely related copper arsenic and copper antimony sulfides, respectively. These minerals often occur together in hydrothermal deposits and can be difficult to distinguish without detailed analysis, though their crystal shapes and associations can provide clues.
Topaz is one of the more familiar gem minerals in this group, forming in high-temperature environments such as rhyolitic cavities and pegmatites. Its hardness and well-developed crystals make it a durable and popular collector mineral, though its color can vary widely depending on trace elements and treatment.
