It is highly soluble, so while it can form large, well-defined crystals in dry conditions, it is rarely stable in humid environments. This makes locality and storage conditions especially important for collectors.

It is commonly found in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is recognized by its dark color and elongated crystals. Its composition can vary widely, which sometimes makes precise classification difficult without laboratory analysis.
