Its color and crystal habit make it a favorite among collectors, but its occurrence is closely tied to specific geochemical conditions where vanadium is present alongside lead. It is commonly found with minerals like cerussite and wulfenite, reflecting a sequence of mineral changes as primary sulfides break down.

It forms in contact metamorphic environments, particularly in skarns where igneous intrusions interact with limestone or other calcium-rich rocks. Vesuvianite can occur in a range of colors, including green, brown, and yellow, and often forms well-defined prismatic crystals. Its presence is a strong indicator of high-temperature alteration involving calcium-rich materials.
Vivianite represents a different type of environment. It is a hydrated iron phosphate that forms in low-oxygen, water-rich conditions, such as peat bogs, lake sediments, or decaying organic material. Fresh vivianite is typically colorless or pale, but it darkens to blue or green upon exposure to air due to oxidation. This color change can make identification challenging if the mineral has been exposed for varying lengths of time.
The “V” category also includes minerals tied to uranium and vanadium systems, such as tyuyamunite-related species (though naming varies across sources). These minerals often appear as yellow crusts or coatings and form through the interaction of uranium-bearing fluids with vanadium-rich environments. Less commonly encountered minerals, such as volborthite, further illustrate the diversity within this group. Volborthite is a copper vanadate that forms in oxidized copper deposits and often appears as small, yellow to green crystals or coatings.
